The Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education is used to describe academic and research institutions. The classifications reflect research types as R1, R2, and RCU (a new designation)with R1 spending the most on research. The designations were updated this year with thresholds in defining the institution based on research spending. Data from the national Center for Education Statistics Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System uses 3 years of data to guide categorizing institutions into categories.
1 R1 institutions have the highest research activity, often over 50 million in spending and awarding at least 70 doctorates annually.
2 R2 institutions spend $5 million or more annually and award at least 20 doctorates annually.
3 RCUs- research colleges and universities are the Carnegie classification of institutes that spend more than $2.5 million on research annually.
